Why doesn’t Microsoft incorporate anti-virus protection directly into Windows? Why do they make us buy a……?
separate program to do what the operating system should do anyway. Who cares if Norton or whoever the heck makes anti-virus software loses money, we shouldn’t have to buy their product to be protected online. Plus, the anti-virus companies have a vested interest in keeping viruses out there, because, if viruses ever ceased, there goes their business model. Who knows, they could be responsible for some of the viruses that are plaguing our computers.

This is an age old question. Virus’s have been around for many years, as far back as 1988, when I got my first one on the Amiga computer.
Nobody will ever know if Norton or McAffee are behind the whole slew of virus’s being released on PC. Most of the virus’s I’ve come across, just attack windows IE. From what I believe, Microsoft won’t share the source code for any version of windows, so people started to attack anything and everything microsoft with virus’s.
If microsoft did release an anti-virus (as they almost did with Vista), there would be no money to be made, as you said. Microsoft would probably be looking at more anti-trust crap and more lawsuits. The routines in Vista protect the kernal routines from anything getting into it , which really upset the anti-virus market.
Virus’s will never cease. EVER. It’s too big of a market these days. And well, there’s money to be made before a solution is ever thought of. It’s like when pentium started with the processor, small increments were made on the processor, and I’m talking SMALL.. They NURSE the public so we’ll invest more money.
They may be including Onecare in windows 7 ultimate and home premium
by the time windows 7 comes out Onecare will be the best every couple of months their better and better
Your business logic is flawed and your antivirus logic is flawed.
Microsoft is not an antivirus company. They make software, not antivirus. There is no reason antivirus should be built into the OS. It is and always should be separate from the OS. A company like Norton that focuses primarily on Antivirus can do a much better job at stopping viruses than a company like Microsoft that can only devote a few resources to antivirus.
Also, it is a very bad business model for antivirus programs to "not work" simply to keep viruses out there to perpetuate the buying of antivirus. After all, would you buy an antivirus program that didn’t remove viruses? I don’t think so. There will always be viruses. There’s absolutely no reason for antivirus companies to "make" viruses.
Microsoft can not integrate it in for the reason that Norton among others would sue them. Since microsoft has a monopoly, they have to be very careful because otherwise USA/EU will be after them again.
Anti-virus is out-dated anyway. The future will consist likely of "UAC" (yes the much hated feature in Vista), "HIPS" (in the product Threatfire, etc.) , and other safety mechanisms.
You can use Linux, and never have to worry about viruses.

That’s like asking why General Motors don’t add Fix-A-Flat to their tires when they sell you a car!
Anti-Virus companies are dedicated professionals that spend hours on end to keep their product up to date.
Some are free and some are not.
There are however, rogue malware products like Antivirus 2009 etc.
That want your moneyfor a bogus product.
But most viruses come from tech savvy individuals that have nothing better to do than causing misery to the masses.
