There are so many free antivirus softwares out there for Mac but I want to know which one is best and why. There are so many similar questions on the yahoo answers but most of them say "No one’. I don’t want this answer. I am working on Mac in my company and they use Paid antivirus software on all the macs. I just bought one Mac computer for my home it is very expensive and out of my budget so I want to use a free antivirus for this before I connect it to Internet.

Now Apple has also suggested Mac users to start using antivirus for their Mac computers. so, please don’t answer "None" or "No one" software. Please suggest me which one should I use and why and their Pros and cons.

Check out ClamXav the Macintosh version of the popular opensource ClamAV. It may not have all the bells and whistles of a full app but it does seem to be stable on 10.4.7 and has many useful features.

have a mac version of Sophos Antivirus. This is technically an "evaluation version", but it works fine. It’s not prominently displayed on the Sophos website, so you have to do some digging, and they require you to register before allowing you to download. Then the tricky part is figuring out where to get their virus definitions, and where to install them on your hard drive. The initial setup is not really user-friendly.

Now … some smart-mouth is probably wondering … how would i know if it’s working … Mac OS X is not susceptable to even one virus.

Grisoft’s – AVG Anti-Virus is free, and works very well, from experience.
I am currently using Kaspersky’s anti-virus, super-anti spyware, and malware-bytes. I get mine for free, with torrents and such. But for a really good anti-virus, start using Grisoft’s AVG – AnvtiVirus

Apple has recently removed the suggestion about getting an anti-virus application from their website. It was old information and was mainly for the old MacOs 9. Since there are no released MacOs X viruses, you cannot get a virus which will affect your Mac. The "free" Mac anti-viruses you see are for the most part fakes. There are 4 Mac trojans, they do not replicate, you cannot get one from visiting a website. You have to agree to download one of them & install it using your admin password twice. There’s a free fake Mac anti-virus, a fake Mac adware blocker, a fake porn viewer and a fake poker game.
The main reason for putting an anti-virus application on a Mac would be to stop you from passing on one of the million Windows viruses to a Windows user. So you have to think, should you spend a hundred dollars & slow down your Mac because a Windows user is too cheap or lazy to put an anti-virus application on their PC. I did computer tech for 10 years, I never had a Mac running MacOs X with a virus/malware/adware or trojan.
If you still want to spend the money, check the Apple website, their store lists several Mac anti-virus applications with ratings/reviews by users. You can also get ClamXav for free from it’s website, it is the only legitimate free Mac anti-virus software.
I have 5 Macs, I run no anti-virus software. I just don’t install the fake trojans which send your keystrokes to a website in eastern europe.
