For free, AVG and Avira are both reputable. Many people don’t actually get true viruses anyway, so I care more about what else can they do such as combat other malware such as trojans and spyware. AVG is popular in the US while Avira is popular in Europe. I always used AVG for free, but I don’t recommend free if you can afford to shell out $40 for ESET Nod32.

In my computer repair shop, I see all the mainstream antivirus products get compromised, but I can certainly say that ESET Nod32 has consistently been the best, and without slowing your computer down as much as the rest.
