I don’t even mind the cost, as long as I know that my computer will be running faster, and that it can get rid/detect some of the more difficult intruders.
What’s your take on it?

I used Mcafee on my computer. It works great because it scans your computer as often as you want, and it diagnoses the problem rite away, and all you have to do is click a button to get rid of it… it has a fee, not much, but dont use ANYTHING for free because they are the usuall ones that cause viruses

Do not be put off by free software. Not all free software contains viruses. It is the pop up advertisers i would avoid that software usually carries problems.

However. Free avast and avg virus protection are both very popular and rival paid for versions. Your comp can only have one virus protection installed at a time so if your computer is slow i would suggest avast if it is much newer with decent ram then use AVG. Always keep virus protection updated and active.

Malwarebytes is a great free spyware removal and sybot search and destroy and use at least once a month.

Also a good program to have is ccleaner that cleans up all unused temporary files. Use once a month too.

    Avast – http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html OR
    AVG – http://free.avg.com/

    Malwarebytes – http://www.malwarebytes.org/ AND
Spybot Search and destroy – http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html AND
    Ccleaner – http://www.ccleaner.com/

When you want the best and most complete protection you should install an internet security program instead of just an anti viru program

I have tested several over the last 12 months and so the recommendation I give are from own experiences. I made a top 3

3rd place is Kaspeersky Internet Security 2009
2nd place is Bitdefender Total Security 2009
1st place and in my opinion the best is
    ESET Smart Security

    http://www.eset.com/smartsecurity/

I purchased it and it is now protecting my computer very successfully.

As extra protection I recommend these 2 free programs. I have them running 2.

Threatfire is an anti virus, that can be installed next to any other anti virus program on the same computer
    http://www.threatfire.com/

This is a very good program, that completely runs in the background

There is good Anti-Virus/Spyware/Malware, there is bad Anti-Virus/Spyware/Malware but there is no "BEST" !

Here are my suggestions (and warnings) for free software (I tried all personally):

Stay away from AVG free ( I have found it more defective than helpful ), it may be free but it has hiccups like the two errors that made the news recently on CNET, the first time it said that Zone Alarm (a firewall) was a virus and the second time, it advised to remove a key component of Windows causing those who did to lose their Windows system (they had to issue apologies publicly for this one).

Avast is better but takes a lot of resources in the computer.

If you just need to add a Virus scanner, use Avira: http://www.download.com/Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10322935.html?cdlPid=10901492 along with an Email scanner ( http://www.spamdel.com/ OR http://www.glenn.delahoy.com/software/files/Inbox.htm ).

If you just need a Firewall then the Comodo firewall http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html is the top contender. The firewall itself is very robust and the just-released version 3 includes a well-designed intrusion detection system and Vista compatibility. Comodo also supports internet connection sharing, whereas the free versions of Kerio and ZoneAlarm do not. Make sure that you install it in "Advanced" mode, because the "Basic" installation has the HIPS, which includes the leak test protection, disabled. Use it with Virus scanner disabled (chosen while installing).

If you need both Virus scanner and firewall, use the already mentioned Comodo product in combo mode (Antivirus/Firewall) at installation.

Do not use more than one Antivirus on active mode (it is OK to have one active and others in passive (manual scan) mode), one Firewall (no options there as war between them will shut down your communication system if you have more than one), one good cleaner, two or three Anti spyware/Malware (they each detect something that the others have not seen) and one Email scanner (if your Virus scanner soes not include one) but have at least one of each (for security). There is no excuse to leave yourself wide open.

    Anti-Malware/Spyware suggestions:

Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware: http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button is a good choice and has gotten many people out of jams if you keep it updated.
Spybot: http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-amp-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html?tag=mncol is also a good choice if you use it regularly and keep it updated.

    Cleaner suggestion:

Glary Utilities: http://www.glaryutilities.com/gu.html to remove junk files or remnants of installs (there is always some).

Do not use Ccleaner ( In my time at helping others, I have found it more destructive than helpful and I had to rebuild systems nuked by it in the past ).

( A word of caution, be sure to read all help files completely so that you can apply fixes right the first time ! )
