None of the top three AV’s are worth a flip. As usual no one will tell the whole truth. If you go to a free AV all you will get is a AV full of security holes. I understand your need for free. But you also need to understand what your getting into. All free AV’s have security holes in them. The top three free downloaded AV’s are, AVG, Avast, Avira.

AVG, No root kit protection running in real time. Most all infections come in the form of a root kit. AVG 9.0 is said to have root kit protection. If it does it’s the sorriest i ever tested. It has a hard time removing malware. It may detect it, But 99% of the time it will not remove it. It runs way heaver than they say it does and it doesn’t auto update.

Avast, No heuristic scanning in the free version. Without heuristics you are wide open to drive by downloads and no protection from infected pages. If you download something that is infected this way you will not be able to remove it. Without downloading half a dozen other free programs that may or may not work.

Avira, Has problems updating and with faults positives. So pick your poison.

If you absolutely have to do free go with AVIRA. It does have better detection than the other two. But it does have to be watch closely to make sure it updates properly. Expect to have to delete it when it refuses to update and re-download it.

Avira AntiVir Personal is my pick. Since you intend to go it free, I may suugest that you install the following programs side-to-side, additionally, to ensure maximised security:
    1. Malwarebyte’s Antimalware
    2. SpyBot Search&Destroy

Second choice for AV would be Avast! Home Edition, which too is free, except that registration is required, which too, of course is free.

AVG Antivirus is my personal favourite and my family’s as well. You can pay for extra protection but the free download is amazing as well. Free upgrades every couple of days.

microsoft’s security essentials is free. it automatically updates, scans, cleans and it has a real time scanning. you just need to make sure that your windows is a genuine copy.

I use Avast now, I have also got superantispyware and Malwarebytes. I recently changed to Comodo firewall which seems fine and I seem to boot up quicker. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps
