I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy a spyware killer for years. I have recently added superantispyware. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I have just upgraded to AVG free 8.0 and all seems good so far. Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from http://www.download.com/ I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps

If you are looking for a free anti-virus, I found that AVG Free is one of the best. But I will tell you right now that it does not take care of worms or other new viruses. I found that out from experience. I was using AVG and I got a worm through my e-mail. So I went out and bought Norton. So good luck if you do decide to use AVG. And seeing that you are buying a new laptop, I would really want to protect it the best that I could.

You need to think about more than ‘anti-virus’ if you want to secure your computer. I would suggest you go to http://www.download.com and read about the best security software. The antivirus’ in these answers are okay, but not enough. You need to protect more – start with firefox, install McAfee siteadvisor and other add-ons.

Ad-aware, spybot, ccleaner etc. Many are freeware – but you need antivirus AND antispyware coverage (spywareblaster is good… lots to learn) no easy answers! Research and learn, or stop using Windows!

I use linux now, no problems. You could do a dual boot with ubuntu and stop using windows with internet. My laptop is now 8 months old, and never uses antivirus.

I recommend AVG 8 as the best free virus software. You should also get a firewall to stop things getting in in the first place. I recommend Comodo which is also free. You should also get some spyware removal software. For this I recommend Spybot S&D
