I have had AVG Free Edition for about two years now on all three computers in my network, and all are running smooth and safe as ever.
For this reason I would not recommend you spend money on antivirus software. However, keeping these computers secure was also down to being careful and using my own knowlege, instead of relying soley on an antivirus program.
I have had Norton, Kaspersky and Mcafee in the past, and AVG Free Edition proved to be as good as all of them for me.

Norton is best in terms of security. The latest version is very light.
ESET, if you don’t bother much abt security, want to save system resources.
