The best free AV out there is AVG Free, it has rootkit, spyware, virus, etc protection. It updates its virus database every day, it also scans once a day and allows you to scan indivdule files, etc. It also has a virus vault for isolating viruses that have infected your system 32, etc. Its interface isnt so pretty, but its easy to navigate.

You may want to download malwarebytes also. In its free edition you cant schedule daily scans, but you can still scan manually everyday. Its a surprisingly good program. It also offers a quick scan which only scans the most vital files which takes about 10 minutes to work. The paid version is amazing, but if you need a free one, this teamed with AVG will do it for you.

You may also want to get a good firewall. I suggest Comodo firewall. It has an antivirus built in which is okay, buy the firewall is a lot better, fortunately you can turn the AV off. Its a flexible yet great firewall with a lot of features.

Also for extra spware and adware protection get Ad-aware. It scans pretty quick and is very useful. It doesnt allow scheduled scans in the free edition, but its still a worthwile program.

Some people will tell you to get Avast, Avira, or Mcafee. Do not listen. Mcafee is complete garbage, it just wastes your CPU usage and nothing else. Avast and Aviria arent actually freeware, they are nagware. They nag you with popups and messages at every waking moment that you are on your PC, telling you to get the paid version. You cant do anything without them bothering you, not to mention they are complete garbage, offer little, protection and their databases are really gay to say the least.
