is there some way that i can reboot my computer without a disk…like from the boot menu??
its a windows xp service pack 3
I recently did a norton virus scan, and it found a trojan virus, and a few other spyware items. It fixed all the spyware items, but it said the trojan virus was unable to be erased. I scanned and repeated it to see if it would delete it. It didn’t. I was wondering if anyone knows how I can delete this virus? I am running windows xp if that makes any difference. Thanks
I couldnt decide what to buy for my home PC which has Windows XP.
Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 or Kaspersky Antivirus 2009? Internet Security Software is costlier by than the AV version. Whats the reason for that? Could someone temm me the difference between them? Thanks!
I will soon be planning to buy a laptop, but I will be using it for school and college later on. Which is a better and a smarter choice, Apple or Windows?
I usually use the computer for Internet Search, Writing reports, essays, and other school work, etc. I also use it for storing pictures from my Digital Camera and iTunes as well. I currently have Windows XP in my P.C, yet have been having trouble with viruses, the computer freezes and is somewhat slow during the Internet search process. Yet compare to my school, they use Apple instead, and so far I like it.
All ideas and suggestions are truly appreciated. Thanks!
My computer is already infected with spyware, and trojans and what not. And these windows keep popping up telling me to buy the anti-spyware for my windows xp, but if i bought it.. would it take out the viruses out of my hard drive and everywhere else they might be..or would it just prevent more virus infections? are the ones online even legit? or should i just go out and buy nortons? I think im just going to go to a computer specialist so they can take them out, But i’m just curious because that way I wouldnt have to spend so much money.
By the way, ive already tried the "free" anti-virus things online like that superspyware thing, and the other ones people suggested. Someone told me they were free, and they were NOT.
How do I use the disk that came with my hp or windows xp whatever its called to wipe everything clean and start over so its just like the day I bought it? Help please! Give me steps to do after inserting the disk! Oh, and by doing this, does it get rid of any trojans and viruses?
I’m at a loss here, and I’m looking for some help to buy some time so I can use my laptop this afternoon..
Dell Vostro 1000 w/ Windows XP Home, 2GB Ram, SP2 was 23% free space, now ~ 65% free.
A couple of days ago my laptop started acting quirky — when trying to right-click files to copy, the folder / file would freeze, and then I would have to kill the process or kill explorer.exe to unlock it.
Yesterday, I tried booting up and the system would freeze solid, except my mouse, and if I clicked on things a few times, a loud system beep — all within about a minute of booting up. I played with things for about 7 hours yesterday, finally was able to do a system restore, then deleted all the apps I installed within the last week, ran several virus / spyware scans, cleaned up my registry, etc.
I also ran chkdsk and there weren’t any errors.
Now, I am a bit more stable, but it intermittently freezes up still. Additionally, when I open Firefox, it eats up about 1GB of memory within 10 seconds. I can get firefox to operate normally by completely removing it, then re-installing it, but after starting it a couple of times, it does it again.
I don’t think this is a Firefox problem, though, and I don’t think it’s a virus or bug, at least that I can see through log files, running processes, or through several different spyware / virus detection tools.
If anybody has a clue what might be causing this, and maybe a temporary fix to make the system more stable for a day or so, that help would be appreciated. I won’t suffer much / any data loss as I’m backing things up real-time as I use them now, but it’ll take me over a day to setup my PC, and I have to get work done today.
One more note: I am an exceptionally heavy computer user — sometimes the laptop is online for days at a time, and I actively use it 10+ hours most days. I usually have to format & reinstall the OS 2x a year (I treat my PC kind of like an aggressive pizza delivery-driver treats his/her vehicle), so it’s probably just due to use and abuse, but I’ve never run into these symptoms before, and maybe there’s a likely problem that I can fix temporarily until I have the time to wipe the drive clean and start over.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Yesterday,I bought a new SATA of 160GB.I downloaded AVG 7.5,Comodo BoClean.I have Windows XP Service Pack 3,IE 7 and WMP 11.Today,I downloaded Malwarebytes. What do you guys prefer-Malwarebytes Or BoClean ?Thanks in advance for your assistance.I have Win Firewall Enabled.
I have some virus (or something else)
that no antivirus program can get rid of, i’ve tried mcafee (was installed when i got the virus), windows live one care, and norton internet sec. 2008. None can get rid of it, the computer will be sitting there, and an internet explorer window will open on its own to some random website, and once i turned on the pc and there was another user account i didnt create. So, does Dell PC restore format the hard drive [will it get rid of everything including the problem], or should i use the windows xp cd to reinstall the os. The pc is a dell dimension 2400.
I have a Dell Latitude Laptop using Windows XP. I took it to Geek Squad because it was skipping and the freezing up when I played DVDs or any kind of audio. When it freezes I have to turn it off witut shutting it down. It also wouldn’t freeze right away..it freezes into about 10 minutes of playing DVDs or youtube videos. It was also making weird noises when it froze. Best Buy informed me that the noise wasn’t any hardware issue, but the kind of noise the computer makes when it’s frozen. They said nothing was wrong hardware wise, and that I had 6 viruses on the laptop. Well now, all those viruses are removed, and my laptop is still skipping and freezing when I play DVDs..to the point where I have to turn off the computer without shutting it down. If it’s not viruses, and geek squad said everything is fine with the computer physically, then what is it?

I want to completely clean out my computer like it explains in this question>> http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070317153121AAe4dge
but i don’t want to do it unless it removes all the spyware and viruses i have.
and i have my Windows XP home edition cd so i can put that on afterwards. so please if you know can you help me out.
When I used a program to read how much of my 495 mb sdram is currently being used by the programs i have running in the background of my windows xp.
It showed that about 80% of my ram is currently being occupied by programs running in the background. Is this too much?
My computer is "stucky, not smooth" lately. I’ve checked with spybot and ad-aware there’s no spyware on my laptop. Also ran anti-virus and there’s no virus. I’ve cleaned my harddrive and registry with CCleaner and Ashampoo win optimizer. Lately, happened couple of days, i couldn’t even use my web browers[IE & firefox] to visit any websites! though i know i am connected online with my isp.
Could the 80% ram usage be the source of the problem? Also harddisk is 56Gb in total and now only about 6 gb freespace left. I’m running on Intel M processor 1.6 GHz. win XP sp3. Had the laptop for 6 years.
[side note: system went 'dead froze' several times [about 20? ] over the course of my 6 years usage. whenever that happens i just had to unplugged the power chord to turn off system abruptly without going thru proper ‘ turn off ‘ button in windows. Also had a few very hot summers so laptop couldn’t stand the heat so it auto ‘turned off’ by itself. though now bought the laptop fan cooler. Not sure if these conditions will damage the physical hardware of the system, but i hope it doesn’t…..]
What are your suggestions?
Only answer if you know the answer.
Thankyou very much.
What is the best virus protection and removal software?
I have an Acer Aspire One that runs Windows XP, and I would like to know if anyone knows of a really good virus protection/removal program that protects against all of the viruses and spyware and junk. I would prefer something that I can purchase in a store instaid of off the internet. Thank You!
I have read questions regarding virus removal but I am posting my issue so I can give details and get the correct help. I had McAfee installed when this happened. My computer started getting strange error messages at start up such as Error loading c:\windows\system32\calc.dll the specified module could not be found. Also when I Google something then click on a link I get redirected to some other page that has nothing to do with what I clicked. Now when I shut the computer off and turn it back on everything on my desktop is gone except for the tray at the bottom which keeps showing a bubble telling me to open the security center and when I click that icon in the tray it proceeds to scan the pc, tells me I have 40 known threats and gives me the option to remove them or proceed unprotected when I click remove it shows me a screen where I have to pay. When I use my mcafee to scan the system it says there are no known threats. I also have been receiving popups for what claims to be a "make money with google" site and my popup blocker is on and I haven’t received a popup in years. Does any one have any idea what is going on and what I can do. Also I don’t hav the Windows XP disc because my pc had it already installed when I purchased it.
When I reboot the pc so I can start in safe mode I get a blue screen message whenever I chose safe mode. It says a problem has been detected and the computer is shutting down. The reason I came here to get help to do it on my own is because I’m not able to take it to someone to pay for it getting fixed. So I reeally appreciate evryones help.
I went to the help forums suggested by Sly_Old… and MrGrump and was not able to download the programs that I need to start the halp process because it says my security settings won’t allow me to download it. What could be causing that I have not changed any internet security settings and even when I check everythings the same as I left it. I don’t know what else to do I’m getting kinda discouraged.
my pc is infected with virus. i made a mistake when reformatting it instead of clicking the fresh copy option i click the repair option? will the virus removed by just repairing it? is my windows xp installer infected also because of what happen?
I just bought a used computer
it’s a 2003 windows XP pro
i keep getting reminders at each start up that my anti-virus software may be out of date
the software is: Avast
But i read online if you have more than one virus software it can be bad for your computer,
so how do i update avast?
do i uninstall it and the download a new version? or what?

Well first off we have had this old computer maybe since i don’t know 2001 and its a nice one.. its a Windows Xp made in 2000. Well we needed to have an anti virus software on the computer, so we decided to get Webroot and it’s a really good virus protector. But the problem is we bought "Webroot Spysweeper AntiVirus" And so we had installed it, and now about two months later we realize after amost 12 scans that it hasent been sweeping for viruses. So we relize that it would not let us click the option to scan for viruses or any of the enableing, Do you have to add anti virus to the subsciption? Is this software supposed to come with antivirus protection, or do you have to subscribe because we have gone to the page wear it asks you what you want to buy, so it says it is 10 dollars but I still want to know?
I know that but we bought it from best buy for 40$
I have a gateway/Windows XP laptop. It’s model number is MA7 or is it MX6958, idk.
I’m currently using my FAMILY computer NOT the laptop i usually use.
Before i even say anymore detail, don’t tell me to:
-buy a new one
-give it to a store to fix it
-or give a web page on confusing directions on how to fix it
Some little detail:
-I have the blue screen of death
-my laptop most of the time gets stuck on the WELCOME page
-I can’t get on internet
-I have the dreaded Advanced Virus remover thing
-i can’t access any of my programs, i can open them but once i open them this comes up : application cannot be executed. Thie file is infected. Please activate your antivirus software…
HOW it all started… Well, i was on the internet on my free time when i went on youtube. Then on a video page it tells me that i should go to a certain webpage to watch anime. So i did, the next thing i knew… over 10 virus alerts popped up, my laptop froze, and afterlike about 15 min. the blue screen of death and the fake Advanced virus Remover thing came up…
So people please help me cuz i need the laptop for school and my personal enjoyment.
Is you give me step by step instructons on how to fix it, i will vote you best answer.
PLEASE HELP, I’M IN DESPERATE NEED OF HELP…
A little while ago I got the Spyware Guard 2008 virus, and after reading many articles and guides on removing it I installed Malwarebytes and CCleaner. Then I went into the Windows XP Safe Mode and scanned, removed and restarted the computer about 5 times, each time it would find the same Spyware files again. I don’t know why it is not fully removing the malware because I have heard of some many good removals with this program!! Either way I am getting very frustrated. PLEASE ANY ANSWERS ARE VERY APPRECIATED!!!
My computer has been infected with spyware virus for a week by now. I left it like that for like 4 days then I went out to buy an antispyware program. I bought McAfee VirusScan Plus 2007.
I bought it and installed it. The program scanned and removed some of the spyware but it is nowhere close to getting rid of every spyware. And m computer constantly turns off itself with blue screen popping up telling me that computer is turning off because of system failure or whatever.
I tried to turn on the computer on Safe Mode, it worked the first few times. However, now my computer would not even turn on. The blue error screen pops up everytime.
It is horrible. I do not want to reinstall the Windows XP again.
I can’t lose all my files. I spent 40 dollars on that stupid antispyware program too.
Please help me.
I was recently swarmed with a severe malware oriented virus that no matter how many spyware/antivirus oriented programs/software I bought like Norton Antivirus (which I was told for 80 bucks is crap) but I guess I went with the old adage I get what I pay for and then I bought Trend Micro (was also told by the best buy sales associate that it rivals NAV) but it still didn’t help. So I pretty much stripped the 5 year old HP Pavilion desktop that I had back to factory settings, knock on wood the icons are ridiculously HUGE but its been 3days and I haven’t had a whiff of pop up/spyware crap come my way (yet), though my Windows XP was restored to factory settings.
So what can I install on this system so I don’t end up with another Vundo/malware oriented Trojan. I don’t want to install my NAV Antisecuirty software pacakage b/c I was told it was crap & now I can’t seem to trust the generic TrendMicro, so now what do I install so this computer combats any/all update troublesome viruses Thnx
I’m looking to buy a laptop under 0, hopefully a Mac, slightly used or new, with capacity for Photoshop CS3 and a decent amount of memory. I’m a senior in highschool and my computer has basically crashed due to the WIndows XP AntiVirus 2008 Virus, and I’ve tried at least twenty different methods of getting the virus off and nothing seems to work.
I’ve resorted to just buying a laptop, but it definitely needs to be able to hold Photoshop.
Any ideas?
Thank you guys so much!

EDIT:
Thank you for the advice– I was originally just going to get it wiped clean, but my parents were saying it would cost somewhere around 0. From what you’re saying, though, it should cost about 0 and save me a lot of trouble.
Thanks again!
