I just bought a new HP pavillion laptop and I want it to last as long as possible. I use it for about 12 hours every day for work (typing documents). Should I shut it down completely overnight? Will that wear it out faster though?

Also, any other tips for making it last longer??? (I have virus protection).

Not shutting it down at night will wear it out, can cause damage if left on too long.

As long as you have a good backup power supply with surge protection there will be no problem

    Should not be a problem

Yes, shutting down is a good idea. This keeps your system from corrupting, but also will fully shut off the system, and power down, instead of standby mode. Standby mode, there is still power running through the laptop…. also unplug power adapter when not in use. Please check attached source more more info.

There are a few things you can do:

Keep it clean – defrag regularly.

If you have it plugged in all the time, remove the battery. This will make the battery last longer. The battery will keep charging and if it has a memory, when you run on battery it will not last.

It is up to you if you want to shut it down. There are 2 sides to this debate. I personally like to shut it down. Leaving it on will not hurt it, so really it is what you are comfortable with of course.

I would recommend powering it down at night. As you work with it throughout the day, heat builds up inside, which over time can wear out your computer. Powering down at night gives it a chance to cool down. Also, just like anything else, the more use it gets, the more wear it takes, so the 12 hours of off time should actually reduce the wear your laptops internal components take, improving its longevity.

I’ve heard so many stories about whether or not you should shut the thing down at night or not it’s sick
I think the last story I heard was shutting it down completely is better for the thing
and don’t crash it, go through all the proper steps
don’t just plug it into the wall, get a surge protector so if there is a power surge it won’t zap the thing
also back all your documents and stuff up, (I’d do it twice, and separate where you store the copies of your work)
    because
it’s just a machine and you have no guarantees

Shutting down your laptop is a great way to make it last a long time, but i recommend buying a sort of fake battery; it plugs into the back of your computer and bridges the connectors so you can use your laptop on AC power without wearing out your battery, then when you want to go somewhere, just plug the battery in. You’ll save about 2-3 years of battery life by doing this.
