I’m using Macbook Pro with Macword. I received an alert from Microsoft that my comp has viruses and led me to download (and buy) and anti-virus software. Isn’t it that Mac is virus free? Please advise.

I agree with not using your administrator account for general computing. There is an antivirus program for mac called Virex. I think its made by McAffee, but generally you don’t need it for Mac because most mal-ware on the net is targeted at PCs but that doesn’t mean Macs can’t get a virus. It’s just less likely for them to. I’d check out Virex

Macs are not virus free. They are susceptible to attacks just like Windows.

I do not use anti-virus because I don’t go to strange websites or download things from untrusted sources.

    Here’s 3 general tips.
    1. Do not use an administrator account for general use
    2. Do not download / install / use anything that comes from an untrusted source.
    3. Use common sense.

what you are probably seeing is XPantivirus2008 (or a variant) – technically its a trojan (not a virus)

and its a baddie – i see it a *lot* lately

do NOT pay for the software they are trying to get you to buy – its a scam and has been shut down by the FTC (see slashdot link in my comments)

you must have been browsing around somewhere and it got into your browser

    ??

and yes, usually macs are pretty much immune to hackers/viruses/trojans/bots/etc – guess not anymore
    :(

    welcome to the internet!lol
