Okay, so my laptop is giving serious problems. First of, I have an Acer Aspire 3050 with Windows Vista Home Premium installed. One day back in the beginning of August I restarted my computer (which I rarely do, I prefer to hibernate) and when it turned back on… boom! It wasn’t working. I tried doing everything, from restoring it to a week before, un-installing programs and even running virus scans. I should note that I did all that in Safe Mode since the laptop was having trouble opening programs, the mouse pointer would flicker when I ever I tried moving it, whenever I closed the monitor the laptop would remain on but not show anything on the screen, and it was literally unable to turn off, restart, or hibernate. I would have to take off the battery in order to get it to turn off. After about a week of not using it cause of the problems, I turned it on and it was working just fine again. At the end of August I restarted the computer again and the problems came back. This time, however, I realized that the problems would disappear if I removed the battery and just left the laptop connected to the external power. Of course, putting the battery back in would result in problems all over again. I’m not sure if the problem is with the battery of with the drivers cause the battery does what it has to do. It charges and when the computer is not going through problems I can disconnect the external power and the laptop continues working just fine.Additionally, the battery system icon that appears at the bottom right corner of the screen doesn’t appear when the computer is working but when it isn’t working it is there but it indicates that either the battery isn’t in (when it is) or that it isn’t charged (when it is).

So what do you guys think? Is the problem with the battery or with some driver? Or is it something else? And if it is with a driver how can I fix it?
I should mention that the computer worked perfectly fine in Safe Mode. Another reason why I am unsure that the problem is with the battery.
Holding down the power button did nothing at all. The computer would not turn off. It seemed like it tried but would stop half way and then stay that way. I sometimes gave it hours to turn off on its own, still it wont. I will reemphasize that I never removed the battery and the external power at the same time. When I took out the battery and let the computer connected to the external power then it would turn off the way it should. And I am only using my mouse pad that came with the laptop, nothing else.

Seems like a bad battery, but it reminds me of a problem someone I know had. His laptop would not boot to XP, but it worked in safe mode. It turned out the little button that is pressed in when you close the lid was stuck in. This made XP think the lid was closed, so the screen was black. Safe mode works slightly different so that worked fine. Check that little button to see if it is the cause of all your woes.

I don’t mean to patronize, but are you sure you held in the power button long enough to shut it off? If you press and hold it firmly for about 30 seconds it should just cut power (not shut down) to the whole thing. 30 seconds is probably longer than it will take, but if it hasn’t shut off by 30 seconds you definitely have a problem.

Sounds like a really weird problem. next time you have problems, instead of removing the battery, hold down the power button (the on to turn it on ) for 5 or 10 seconds. This should turn your computer off even if its not responding. I don’t think it is a battery issue, if it was you computer would just shut off, not give you problems. I believe your windows is slightly corrupted. maybe a crash happened or pulling the batter without letting your computer know could have caused problems. Try the holding the power button down instead of removing the batt. If that does not work i would recommend reinstalling windows. Could be a driver conflict with something else on your system. you said the mouse was going wacky right? Some drivers for a mouse wont load in safe mode but could be problematic in regular mode. If you could be more specific about exactly what it does when its not working it might be more helpful. It also could be a ram problem causing your comp to act wacky when it fails.

    UPDATE:
If it failed to shut off with the button pushed for at least 10 sec, theirs probably a problem with your power button. A loose connection could be causing problems. It could also be a bad power supply in the computer. i cant imagine your battery is the problem though
