That’s a tough one, without any specific information on what virus or malware is affecting your system. If your system will boot into safe mode; I’d do that (press F8 prior to Window’s bootup and select "Safe Mode with Networking"), and uninstall Norton and install a trial of Kaspersky, http://www.usa.kaspersky.com/
Then I’d run a thorough scan with Kaspersky in normal boot up mode.
As I’ve said prior, if I had more specific information on what was affecting or how your system was misbehaving, a more detailed answer could be possible.
Keep me posted if ya have anymore specific information.
What version of Norton do you have? The best is norton 360. If you don’t want to pay for antivirus, get AVG free 8.0. Then for antyspyware, get Spyware terminator and Malwarebytes. If your computer is connected to a router which has a built in firewall, you can just use windows firewall. If you have a direct, high-speed connection, download Comodo firewall or Zonealarm firewall.
first if you have Norton how do you know it doesn’t work? if it is turned on and up-to-date it is working. second if you get a virus the only way you could possibly remove it yourself is with a system restore providing the virus didn’t disable your computer to where you can’t even do that. a good free antivirus is AVG BUT you should only run one antivirus so if you download it you have to be sure Norton is turned off. as to spyware and adware go to cnet.com and download adaware free and spybot S/D also free.
Trying to remove viruses and spyware manually can be a quick way to really screw up your computer unless you know what you’re looking for. What does norton tell you when you do a scan? Is it norton informing you that you have an infection, or something else?
Try downloading a free antispyware application, such as Superantispyware or HijackThis! and see if that works. Go to download.com and download a free trial of Kaspersky, Counterspy, and/or Webroot Spy Sweeper to get rid of the infection.
And you might want to get yourself a decent security setup. Kaspersky Internet Security is one of the better choices. The Comodo firewall is good, as far as free software goes, though I wouldn’t bet my computer on many of the other freebies out there.
FIRST go to Control Panel > Add Remove Programs > and REMOVE Norton/ symantec.
SECOND:
Get this one that WORKS !!!!
I like this FREE tool that does an EXCELLENT job.
Avast free Home Edition
Get it here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.ht...
And please do a "thorough" scan as soon as you get it downloaded. The user interface is simple. Click the left side, and in the top menu that comes up, select thorough scan.
When it finds a culprit it throws up an alarm, then you DELETE the culprit, (do not quaranteen).
Then allow it to run all of the time, and you will be completely protected. It will "automatically" update itself, also for free.
You only need to renew your registration once a year, also free.
Note: I KNOW of several people who have used AVG and Norton and have gotten a virus anyway.
Don’t go with Zone Alarm as it is hoggy and conflicting.
I’ve tried them all, and have had wonderful results with DEPENDABLE AVAST for the last 5 years.
The corporation I work for uses the Pro version, and has never has an incident. Avast is your answer.
