There is no one BEST program for everyone! Each person’s individual computer usage is completely different. Some folks download illegal programs and music, which exposes them to more infections than any other behavior. Some folks only read their email and do some light surfing.
Because usage is different, the appropriate software is different for everyone.
Here is a list of free programs that do their job well, for various security tasks. Most of the time, several programs are necessary to maintain a full range of security/protection against viruses, trojans, worms, etc.

Any *one* of these would probably work well for you! Read the reviews to be sure.
ANTI-SPYWARE:
Since NONE of the anti-spyware/anti-adware programs are 100 percent accurate in finding and removing spyware, you need *at least* two programs which you will run one after the other, not at the same time.

Avast! or Comodo are the best. Just google it.
You will want the Avast! 4 home edition or the Comodo Security Suite.
(avast! has better virus protection and a BOOT SCAN!) get this is you already have a virus on your computer.

Both are good virus scanners and will remove viruses. You may need to register the product but there is no cost. They will isolate (quarentee) the virus or malware before you can select it to remove it.

Avast is a good AV.
Avira is slightly better, but uses more system resources.
Commodo’s Security suite contains a AV which can be turned off so you can use Avast or Avira for the anti-virus portion.
Recommended Avira AV, Comodo Suite with AV disabled.
a2free is a good on demand malware scanner which I use in addition to my real time Avira AV.
No one AV engine detects everything.
Both Avast and Avira have a high false positive rate.
Your choice.
Avira’s Antivir has the highest detection rate of any of the free solutions…
If you are like me, you want an anti-virus program that has good real-time (stops viruses while you surf) protection…
Avira’s Antivir has the BEST (according to AV Comparatives) real-time protection (76%) of almost ANY anti-virus program, paid or free. Avast 4.8 only has a (58%) real-time detection rating)… Look it up yourself here:

I really don’t care for all those "bells and whistles" and all that "flashy" stuff the Avast has…. I just want a decent program that will stop the bugs from ever getting into my machine in the first place…How about you ?
