Norton is terrible. If you are a heavy Internet user and have important documents I would recommend buying either Kaspersky or NOD32. If you don’t care if your system crashes (may not happen – but more likely) and you want a free anti-virus I recommend in order of popularity, but please choose the right one for you (install only one):
1. AVG Free
a. A simple interface (easier to use than Avast! and Avira)
b. Can detect about 82.82% of viruses
Cons: low virus detection
2. Avast!
a. Real-time protection
b. It has an option to delete a virus once found
c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.
Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface
3. Avira AntiVir
a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG
b. It’s cute umbrella icon
c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses
Cons: A very sluggish update
I advise against Norton anti-virus, it’s bloated software that slows your computer down. The best anti-virus available is Kaspersky or NOD32 (recent tests at av-comparatives.org).
DO NOT DOWNLOAD ONE!!!! Because alot of time they can be viruses themselves…The ones you buy in the store are very cost effective. So don’t mess ur computer up. Just go to walmart and pick up Norton of McAfee there both good products
Norton is crap. download.com has a ton of GREAT anti-virus and anti-spyware products. NEVER download from a site you don’t trust.
With so many viruses going around, a "free" anti-virus wouldnt guarantee of removing malicious threats. AVG and all other free anti-viruses only detect the threats, they dont exactly remove the threats. As a suggestion I would suggest you get either; Norton Internet Security, Trend Micro, or Mc-Afee. Your computers health is very important, and buying protection will reduce your chances of future infections. Heres a link to symantec for more info on their products.

Good Luck….
It’s a complete waste of money, just like Windows.
There are better free alternatives.
Go to http://www.ubuntu.com, and download their free operating system. Burn it to disc. Install it.
With the free operating system, you get a free office suite, graphical editor, music programs, and pretty much anything else you can think of. On top of that, it’s almost impossible to get a virus on Ubuntu, or other Linux os’s.
Stop wasting your money on software you really don’t need.
Try a online antivirus scanner and a online anti-adware/malware/spyware scanner in safe mode with network to clean up your computer BEFORE you download anything. This because the program you download can get infected.
Disable "System Restore" for Windows Me and XP, then restart your PC to clean your system restore points for viruses, spyware, adware etc.
Now restart in safe mode.
To get in safe mode Press "F8" upon bootup.
Select "Safe mode with Networking".
Go to Start – Run – type iexplore http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html Enter(ok).
Do a full system scan. If something is found, delete it, reboot and do the same again in safe mode with network.
When that scan does not find anything you reboot again in safe mode with network.
Go to Start – Run – type iexplore http://www.ewido.net/en/ Enter(ok).
Do a full system scan. If something is found, delete it, reboot and do the same again in safe mode with network.
**NOTE: Do NOT do anything else with your computer when scanning. This because you can start virus/adware/spyware/malware manually.
When no one of these scanners are showing anything you can reboot back to normal mode.
Turn on "System Restore".

You need to get one antivirus program, one firewall and some spyware/adware/malware removers if you don’t have it.
I use Norton Internet Security (antivirus, spyware, firewall, add blocker, mail spamfilter, pop up blocker etc) Ad Aware, Spybot and more on my desktop running XP Home SP2 with Firefox and Yahoo Toolbar with pop up blocker.
On my laptop i have Ubuntu 7.04. No security needed in Linux, but i use antivirus and firewall. Firefox is standard.
I have no virus, spyware, adware, pop ups etc on my computers.
Mozilla Firefox and Opera are safer browsers to use then Internet Explorer.

AVG Anti-spyware Free.
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tp...
Spybot – Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven’t intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don’t see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there’s no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.
