Kaspersky Antivirus is not only an antivirus program; it is an all-around antimalware program which includes spyware and adware detection technologies. Therefore, you do not NEED to run another antispyware application unless you’re paranoid and would like to further layer your PC’s protection. I, myself, used this program at one time and found no need to supplement it with anything else. As to the latter part of your question, version 7 was released some time ago, so you may want to upgrade if you have a valid license for the product.

In addition to anti-virus, you should have at least one anti-spyware program installed on your computer. Anti-virus and anti-spyware look for different types of threats, so your computer is better protected if you have both.

There are a number of free and for-pay anti-spyware programs around. Two good free ones are SpyBot Search & Destory and Lavasoft Ad-Aware; two good for-pay ones are Sunbelt CounterSpy and Webroot SpySweeper.

One caution, though: If you have any real-time protection features set up in Kaspersky, you need to NOT turn on any of those features in your anti-spyware. If you have more than one program on your computer doing real-time protection, they tend to conflict with each other and slow your computer down. A good strategy to follow would be to leave the real-time protection running for your anti-virus, and use the anti-spyware programs only for one-off scans – that is, the program is only running when you tell it to scan. Good luck and hope that helps!
