A couple of months ago, my younger brother visited and used my laptop while he was here. Since then, I’ve unnsuccessfully tried to take all of the adware and spyware off of my computer. It worked for a while, but now this is just getting ridiculous. I downloaded Windows Live Care antivirus software on my desktop, and it cleaned all of the virus’s off. I want to get it on my laptop, but I don’t have Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed. I’ve got my computer set so that it automatically updates everything, but still no service pack. I went to the windows update site using IE, but it comes up with an error message. Here’s the exact message, maybe you can decipher it:
[Error number: 0x80248015] "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem."

I also cannot search Google or get onto certain sites or click on certain links while using Firefox. These work in IE, but then I get bombarded with pop-ups.
I need to be able to get updates on this laptop, and I need to find a way to get Windows XP Service Pack 2 so that I can get the Windows Live antivirus, etc.
This is the computer I need to use for school, and I’d really like to be able to use it again.

I’m usually pretty good with computers, but I’m at a loss with this one. I can’t spend any money or buy a new computer.
Help? =(

Google Error number: 0×80248015 and read some of the information. One item I read says to check the time and date on your computer as one possible problem.

    Good Luck

If all you need is SP2 update and not the XP O/S you can order the CD from Microsoft or use a different computer and download it to a CD or USB storage and then install it on your laptop.

If you are running a legitimate version of XP, you don’t need SP2, you can jump right to SP3 as per Microsoft.
    ==========
    Windows XP Service Pack 3
    Release Date: May 6, 2008

Windows XP Service Pack 3 is a service pack that is cumulative back to the last currently-supported service pack. This means that Windows XP Service Pack 3 contains all the fixes that were included with Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). If you have already installed Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), you do not have to install Windows XP SP2.

Try going directly to the Microsoft website, click on Security and Updates on the right hand side.

Regarding the pop-ups, these may be caused by spyware. Antispyware and antivirus products differ in what they detect, how they identify malware, and how they remove it. I would recommend running an antispyware application before checking for updates as malware can interfere with security patch downloads. Here are a few for your consideration. All are free.

    SuperAntispyware
    http://superantispyware.com/
Spybot S&D (free version requires manual updating)
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
Adaware from Lavasoft (free version requires automatic updating)
    http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php
(These programs can be run in Safe Mode after installation and updating)

You may also want to install a spyware blocker as well. It should help cut down on the pop-ups.

    Spyware Blocker

This is free and requires you to check for and enable updates manually once a week or so. It uses no system resources. It blocks spyware before it installs.
SpywareBlaster (inoculates, not a spyware removal tool)
