I have a PC Laptop that is a little outdated but still does the job for me. Anyway, it runs far too slowly. It takes for ever to load a page online and also even takes far too long to open up an application such as MS word.

I usually delete all the cookies and any applications I do not use. It also does not seem that I have any major viruses on my laptop.

I plan to get a new laptop as soon as I can afford one, but for the time being will have to use this one.

What can I do to make it more efficient without buying anything?

If there are any applications online I can download which will assist me with this I would appreciate a link.

Thanks

You probably have a lot of programs running in the background and using up Processing resources.

Go to Start, RUN, then enter "msconfig" into the box, and enter. This brings up the STARTUP CONFIGURATION UTILITY.

Go to the tab startup, and you can see all the programs that are loaded into your computer upon bootup. Simply uncheck those that you do do want – this can be a tough task, as the names are probably not meaningful.

Go to http://www.processlibrary.com, enter in the name of the process, and you can get a definition.

having said all that, with an old computer, it is not unusual to have slow operation, since most web pages are designed as if everyone had a 2.5GHZ pentium 4.

My old 500MHZ computer is agonizingly slow on the web, so I use it only for document processing and other offline tasks. I was compelled to buy a faster machine to surf.

clean files.. delete, disc scan, take everything out of your start up folder so they wil not be running in background when you start windows. Try to use as few as colors as you can in windows setup for monitor save the ram for processing.

You could re-install windows if u have the disc or you could run Disc Defragmenter which will take awhile but should speed it up.

Disc Defragmenter= Start->Control Panel->Performance & Maintenance->Re-arrange items on your hard disk to make programs run faster

Try http://www.tweaknow.com/RegCleanerPro.html You can use the Pro version for 30 days, and then load in the free version after that. I’ve used this registry cleaner in XP and it seems ok. Don’t over-do it. ‘Just once or twice a year and read each file you’re deleting. You can also compact the registry.

If you haven’t been defraging your hard drive once a week, it may have gotten too fragmented for Windows defrag to repair it. Try using Norton Speed Disk if you have it. For a good indication of your HD being too fragmented, go to Ctrl Alt Delete and click on Performance. The CPU should be 0 to 3% when idle. If it seems to be 100% most of the time when you click on something, it’s busy trying to find files on an extremely fragmented hard drive. You can view your RAM usage here as well.

There are good Memory managers out there (RAM memory), but it’s not really necessary for Windows XP. If you’re running out of memory with XP, it’s usually because there’s spyware on your system.

You can turn off services you don’t use in Windows XP. Right click on My Computer, click on Manage, then on Services. If you don’t know what to turn off by going through the list of services, there are many websites dedicated to explaining each service and what happens when you turn it off. I suggest you google up at least 3 different sites on the subject so you get a good idea.

Lastly, make sure your Virtual Memory is set for Windows to manage automatically.
