I got a computer from a friend and I keep getting pop-ups telling me I have an ADWARE.MYWEBSEARCH.1222 trojan virus that they can’t remove.
Any tips on how to remove it?

Well seeming that it is a friends computer…you’d want to get the computer running as quick as possible…

1.Remove the Spy/Ad-ware, I’d use Spybot – Search & Destroy which will kick off any malicious software off your PC. Make sure you update it before you use it! It is updated weekly and is totally free. Also use the "immunize" function which will stop ad/spy ware before it can get into for PC.

    2. Install Anti-Virus Software, download AVG 7.5.524 which is free and is weekly updated (I’ve used to for a couple of years with no problems) so that should stop virus’s from coming back. (There is a newer version but it will slow down your PC much more that version 7.5.524 does).

    3. Clean it out, download CCleaner, and use the "clean" and "registry" functions to clear up the registry + delete all the tempoary files.

    4. Free up your PC’s RAM, click on start and type "msconfig" then go to the "startup" tab and untick everything except "ctfmon.exe" and your anti-virus program.

    Cheers,

the popup itself might be coming from a spyware / adware application. There are two things you can do
    1) download / install and run a free software called ccleaner
    (run cleaner and issues menus)
    2) If that does not remove the popups, then download / install / update and run a freeware antispyware application called Spybot s&d
    that should solve your problem.
but if the popup still continues then download / run a small free tool called smitFraudFix tool

just download an anti-virus or spyware program, or try to trace the location of the trojan. If it was relly serious then reformat.
