Last night, my friend called me frantically after she realized she opened an email with a virus. She wants me to fix it for her but she was dumb enough to not buy an anti-virus software. How can I remove the virus from her computer then? Any Helpful hints please? She can’t even afford geek squad….

    1. Antivirus software doesn’t have to cost money, and that includes one of the top 5 (Avast) according to independent testers.
    2. Geek Squad is notoriously bad for doing anything with computers. They will lie to you to get more money (they have in the past) and the rates they charge are ludicrous (that’s firsthand experience).

I strongly recommend you go with Avast because it’s just so good. It’s pretty easy to install, and when you’re done it’ll give you the option of a boot-time scan, which will re-start the computer and kill every virus it can before Windows even starts. It can also scan for spyware and rootkits, something the (free) competition can’t do.

The perfect compliment to Avast is IOBit Security 360. It’s like the (mentioned above) MalwareBytes except after it’s done scanning for spyware it’ll allow you to guard the computer against future threats, keep spy cookies out of your web browser, and sweep your tracks on the Internet.

try a online virus scanner Onecare.Live.com (that one is Microsoft) or Symantec.com or Housecall.TrendMicro.com or Comodo.com or Panda.com try one or all they are free and can be trusted

  • Ben says:

First your have to scan for viruses and identify the virus name. Use geeksquad’s free virus scanner. Then locate the script on the internet using the virus name that’ll solve the problem.

Unfortunately, she might in the end have to format, lose everything and start over. It’s usually the case.

Depends on the virus some are easily removed, some aren’t, yet there are a lot of really good free programs available. Check out http://usefulinfo-comp.blogspot.com/ for more information.

  • knowguy says:

You can run antivirus and antispyware programs, but the sad fact is if you have found one virus on your computer, you probably have several. Cleaning the computer now requires you to follow these steps, because modern viruses and spyware entrench themselves in files that your computer needs in order to run:

    1. Virus-check your data files (not application files– you have installer CDs for those).
    2. Back up the data files, getting them off your hard drive.
    3. Get your original operating system CDs that came with your computer.
    4. Boot your computer from the operating system CD.
    5. Select the option that erases your hard drive and then reinstall your system software.
    6. Turn on your software firewall that came with your operating system.
    7. Reconnect to the internet, and download *all* Windows updates, no matter how long it takes.
    8. Reinstall your application software, and update the applications as much as you can.
    9. Reinstall your data files.
    10. Create a limited user account on your system that does *not* have administrator access, and web surf only from this account.

Yes, this is a pain in the butt. No, there is no other way. No, antivirus and antispyware programs cannot fix this problem on its own.

So, what do you do in the future?

    1. Never click on links you find in an e-mail.
    2. Never open an e-mail attachment, ever.
    3. Only download files from a reputable website that you know is on the up-and-up.
    4. Never use bit-torrent and other file-sharing programs.
    5. Never use an unsolicited drive-checking site.
    6. Turn off all java and java scripting by default, and only enable java and java scripting for sites that you know you can trust.
    7. Never read an unsolicited e-mail, and delete spam immediately. It is possible to be hacked by reading an e-mail alone.

Please adhere to the ‘dont’s’ I provided above, because you will have to repeat the cleaning steps that I listed first *every time you get infected.* Anti-spyware and anti-virus programs are good to have, but they are a second line of defense. The best way to protect your system is you, and changing your behavior.

    Good luck!

As dangerous as a virus is to your computer, deleting it by yourself can be even more dangerous. Removing a virus without the help of antivirus software is possible but risky
    1
Go to the "Run" command in the "Start" menu and input "cmd" in the text box. This brings up the command prompt in a DOS window.
    2
Switch the Command Prompt to the drive infected with the virus by inputting it (the drive letter followed by a colon). Type in "attrib -s -h *.* /s /d" and press "Enter" once the prompt is reading the correct drive.
    3
Bring up the drive’s content directory by inputting the "dir" command. Look for any .exe files that are suspicious. Anything accompanied by a .inf or .dll file is a big red flag.
    4
Rename the files that activate the virus–the ones that are attached to the .exe file. Type in "Rename" followed by the full file name followed by any harmless name you create. You can now access the drive without activating the virus.
    5
Go to the drive folder where all the virus files are located. They are usually within the "Program Files" folder. Delete every one of them and clear out your recycling bin.
    6
Open the registry editor by inputting "regedit" in the Run window. Search for the virus’ registry keys, which are often within the folders with "HKEY" in the name. Delete all the registry keys associated with the virus.
    7
Reboot the system once all the virus files and keys are removed.
