Have you checked out the Apple laptops. I just bought my first apple, and I love it. You don’t have to worry about viruses at all. If you download anything at all that has a virus or something harmful, it does not install. They obviously have iTunes and that is great as well. If you have a iPod, then you will have nothing to worry about when linking it up with the new computer. I had mine custom built at apple with 4GB of RAM and 250GB of memory. I got a 15 inch screen. This laptop is super quick on the internet. I am very satisfied with my purchase, even though I was nervous buying an apple.
Try having someone build one for you. You can most likely spend less money because you can buy what you want.

If you want to save some money and opt out of the Microsoft Office, there is a program on http://www.openoffice.org and it is very simular to Office. You can save your files with the appropriate extension, such as .xls for spreadsheets, .doc for documents, etc.
Be sure to get a good anti-virus software, and I would stay away from Norton and McAffee. They both are RAM hogs and are not that great. I use PC Cillian from Trend Micro and it was recommended to me from a friend who has a PhD in Computer Science.
Most laptops today come with a CD and or DVD burner(s) and USB drives so you can save data on CDs, DVDs, and flash drives.
dv6836tx is a good choice. you can take that
