At the moment, I cannot afford to buy anti virus software. I do not want my computer to crash. Can someone recommend a good free download? I tried AVG, Avast and Kaspersky. I didn’t like any of those. In fact, I got several viruses WITH AVG installed. Thanks!
P.S I do not want a trial version. Zone Alarm only has a free firewall. I have a firewall. Thanks

Antivirus software (AVG, for example) is completely useless. People think having antivirus installed protects you. It doesn’t protect you. It’s like having a scanner on your house that has a database of known criminals and scans for them… all the while all the doors to your house are wide open, and anyone who isn’t a known criminal gets right by the scanner.
You can secure Windows by leaving useless antivirus software off your computer and then doing the following:
1. Set Windows updates to install automatically
2. Set up a limited user account and always use it. Never log in as administrator, except to install trusted programs
3. Get rid of Limewire, if you have it, and don’t download illegal music and movies
4. Regularly back up your personal files
5. Learn how to avoid social engineering. Read up on it and research programs before you install them. When in doubt, go with open source.
Zonealarm possibly. Its a firewall and antivirus but I don’t know if the antivirus is included in the free version. Go check it out. http://www.zonealarm.com

BitDefender also has a good engine, but it is not real-time. But it gets the job done.
