Can anyone recommend a free anti-virus and/or spyware protection to download from a safe reliable source on the internet? So far I’ve had no luck…I get stuck with the ones that say "Free!" But then you download a huge program onto your machine, then run a virus scan, then, the results to tell you how many errors/viruses/spyware you have, but THEN you have to PAY to actually have th program FIX it! That is enough to make me really MAAAAD! lol
A couple of years ago, a friend had mentioned a very goos free anti-virus to me, unfortunately I am at a loss as to what it was called or where to find it! From what I heard at the time, it was much better than anything that you could even BUY. I believe it was a German/English website (if memory serves me correctly)
So if that sounds familiar to anyone, please help! If not that one in particular, I am willing to try anything that has a good reputation, and a tried and true track record.

you need both, avg IS NOT anti-spyware, just anti-virus
I would recommend Ad-Aware from Lavasoft for adware/spyware and AVG for the anti-virus. For free products, they do a good job of giving basic protection.

Like many of the guys around here, I recommend you to get
AVG antivirus and Antispyware.
On the antivirus side youll be ok.
If for any reason it doesn work for you there is also Avast, and Bitdefender.
However on the spyware side, you need always more protection.
You will also need spybot, too and maybe an extra one.
Whatever you need in software, you can always find a Free, reliable option. Sometimes way better than the expensive stuff.

(1) AVG Free Edition 7.5 anti virus from Grisoft.com ( get your updates)
(2) Spybot Search & Destroy 1.4 anti spyware ( get updates also)
(3) Windows Defender for a firewall, because AVG free edition does not have one. Windows Defender can be found at Windows Market Place in the Security section.

I use Panda. If you want to try some of their tools for free go to http://www.infectedornot.com That web site is part of their new campaign "Infected Or Not?".
There you can try their new products (Panda NanoScan and Panda TotalScan) for free and, in exchange, they collect statistics that are presented in the campaign’s website to raise awareness on the malware infection problem.
You should try them, they have more virus definitions than anybody else and they detect all kinds of malware (viruses, trojans, worms, adware, spyware, hacking tools, etc.)
