The used laptop I bought has an expired Norton subscription that needs to be renewed, but I don’t want to spend the money if AVG free will give me the same protection.

i was recently in the same situation. I kept Norton and used AVG. The problem I had was with my firewall. Norton and ZoneAlarm kept having conflicts with each other.
After reading a bunch of forums, and doing my own research, I learned that you should only have one firewall, one antivirus, and a few good antispyware programs like spybot, spywareblaster, and adaware. I uninstalled Norton (it’s a lengthy procedure because it doesn’t uninstall all the way), and started using Kerio as my firewall. Now I have a well maintained, well protected machine.

all this information i got from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com
