I want to buy my 7 year old son a cheap laptop, enough for him to use to surf the web, I found a lap top w/ Intel Atom 270 Processor. Do I still need to purchase an anti-virus? and should 512 mb be good enough for him to surf the web. I know nothing about computers!

No matter what processor it has, you will need to get an antivirus for the computer. It’s doesn’t have to be Norton, though. You can use free programs like Avira, Avast, or AVG. That laptop will probably be great for a 7 year-old if they do not do gaming and just homework or internet browsing. It’s a basic computer and not made for gaming, movies, or those things.

No to buying Norton… and Yes, 512 mb of ram will be enough if you are not running Vista.
Now, here are the 10 free programs that I feel that you need:

    1) Openoffice Suite – free
    2) avg antivirus 8.0 – free
    3) superantispyware – free
    4) Firefox 3.0 – free
    5) Foxit reader – free
    6) 7-Zip – free
    7) Foxit PDF Editor – free
    8) Itunes – free
    9) Gimp – free
    10) VLC media player – free
