This morning i turned on my laptop (HP, vista home premium), logged on and it said: windows has encountered a critical problem. it will log off. save your work. then sometimes it says error and sometthing else then the computer restarts so i can only stay logged on for about 10 seconds. I’ve tried system restore and start up recovery but it says it can’t do it automatically.I’m sure its infested with viruses because i was using a norton free trial and it eventually expired and was gonna soon buy the full lversion, plus i had been installing software last night. any suggestions of what i can do? I’ve only had this laptop 2 months i cant bear the thought of having to buy a new one. (I’m using my dads laptop now just in case your wondering lol)
Sorry I forgot to say that i didnt download the norton thing, it came with the computer. at the time of buying my laptop i didnt have enough money too buy norton with it but installed on it was a 30 day free trial. i hadnt installed any other virus protection programme.

Your laptop should came with a service plan. On that service plan there is an 800# you can call . Have you tried using what they call a kill disk. What that does is it totally wipes out every bit of information on the hard drive. Then you reload your startup disks. If a virsus or something is on the hard drive that could be stopping your comp from doing system restore.

But before we get ahead of ourselves try the kill disk , after the disk cleans out the harddrive, re load the recovery disks. Do not, I repeat do not do any 30 day free trials over the internet, expecially Norton. They are terrible. Almost as bad as Mcafee. I like to use Trend or AVG. They seem to work the best. Oh yeah, one question for you,,,,when you downloaded the free trial of Norton, Did you delete any other security program that came with the laptop. Cause if you did not delete the version that came with your laptop that could be causing a conflict in your computer. If you can keep your laptop running long enough get that free trial of norton out of there, if you cant keep irt running long enough grab the kill disk fro Staples or Circuit City and the reload your programs.
