Have a cable modem attached to a wireless router. Connected to the router are a wired desktop and a wireless laptop.
The wireless laptop is infected with spyware and/or viruses.
When I tried downloading anti-spyware programs, IE failed because that very spyware is preventing the download (ie does the usual "buy me" crap).
I went onto the desktop to download the software and now that doesn’t have internet connectivity.
Tried resetting the modem and router but to no avail.
Tried to update the router firware (from the desktop interface) and the router claims that there is no connectivity even though the modem indicates there is (blinking lights are all good).
Any ideas?

Yes, because the hijacked computer is busy sending out spam by the truck-load and using up all of your internet bandwidth in the process.
Also, if you’ve lost connectivity, then enough people have complained about the spam spewing-forth from your IP address for your ISP to shut you down.
Disconnect the hijacked computer from the network until you can get it cleaned-up.
Absolutely! You need to install a anti-virus—spyware program like Utilities Fix It 7 and remove those parasites first! People are depending on AOL and other anti virus software that does absolutely nothing unless it is installed on YOUR computer!
Yes it can effect the connectivity of the other computer. Shutdown the laptop or disable the wireless card while troubleshooting. If your connectivity is not restored, shutdown both the cable modem and the router. Restart the cable modem first. Once it is done posting, restart your router. If this does not restore connectivity. Bypass the router and connect your computer directly to the cable modem. Check your network connection to make sure it is getting an IP address. If it is getting an IP address, then you probably have a bad router. If it isn’t call the cable company for assistance with their cable modem. I hope this helps.
Yes,of course can!
Install a best anti-spyware/virus in your computer.
