i just bought a brand new computer—working fine— now i keep getting a message saying that the computer is infected! i see an icon for some "anti-virus system pro" program (which is sending me the message about the infection) opens up and scans the computer (listing all the "infections"), but when i try to open it or delete it from add/remove programs (from control panel) or even do a search of the files—nothing comes up for this program!

antivirus system pro is a computer infection. that’s why you can’t find it listed under normal programs. here’s how you can delete this fraud: http://www.spywarevoid.com/remove-antivirus-system-pro-antivirus-system-pro-removal.html
That is malware, it is the infection. You need to run a scan with your real antivirus software (update it first).
Here’s how to remove "Anti Virus System Pro" a trojan or a fake anti virus, it wants you to buy their program

Basically you need Malwarebytes for spyware removal

And after done, run CCleaner to clean computer and fix registry.

handyman is right
Actually that program itself is the malware/adware. It would nag you to download certain software. It is all scam. Don’t download anything.
To get rid of the problem, download, install and run free ‘Malwarebytes’.
That is the best antimalware we have.
Then download and install free AVG antivirus.
These two free installs would be sufficient to protect your computer.
That would be malware, there are fake antivirus programs that create the impression you are infected(which you really are) and they pretend to scan and fix your computers problems,(they usually do nothing good)
scan your comp
Install HiJackThis on your system
http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html
and make a system scan do properly look up for that hidden rootkit which is repeatedly upens up on your comuter and kill that process with HijackThis
be safe!! you must have the knowlege to play with the registry files but i think this will solve your problem without any data loss!!
Good luck
