My computer recently did a scan, and found a Trojan in an old file I’ve had for about 7 months. There has never been one there before, so I don’t know if erasing the file would work. So, for some one completely computer virus illiterate, what would be the best way to get rid of this, and is it even wise to do it myself?

try downloading malwarebytes anti-malware,update,and run a full scan, its free and a very good program
You need to kill the process and the dll files attached to the trojan. You need to edit the msconfig and registry to stop it from loading startup. Here is a good tutorial:
